Many essay consulting sites offer impersonal editing services, proclaiming that the perfect essay is simply a click away. At BCG, we believe the college application essay is not about a list of facts or a highlight reel of successes but a personal reflection of your child and their opinions, experiences and dreams that display clear, critical and authentic thinking.
This process doesn’t come easily or naturally to many teens, even the overachievers. That’s what we’re here for. We will teach your child how to structure and communicate their thoughts into a thoughtful, exciting and successful college admissions essay.
COMMON APP ESSAY TUTORING
WHAT IS THE COMMON APP?
The Common Application is a college application shared by its member colleges. Instead of filling out an individual application for each school, all you have to do is fill out the Common Application once and send it to whichever colleges you want to apply to those that accept it.
THE PROCESS

Via Zoom or in-person, we will brainstorm Common Application essay ideas. The hardest part about writing a college essay is figuring out what to write about. This is where Michelle’s reporting skills improve the process. Michelle will conduct an in-depth interview (or interviews) to discover a storyline that expresses who your child is and what separates them from the thousands of other applicants trying to fill those few spots available at their colleges of choice.

Once we unearth their story, we will teach your child how to create a framework for the essay, which will be the foundation for writing the first draft.

We work in Google docs so that both the tutor and student can be in the document at the same time. This allows us to write together with both student and tutor fully participating in each session.

We will review the first draft together, identifying ways to make it stronger.

Your child will write a second draft of the essay, which we will again, review together.

We will continue to make the necessary edits and revisions until there is a final version that invokes the necessary emotion and detail for a memorable essay.

DRAFT ALREADY COMPLETE
Some students come to us with a draft already complete. The process for finalizing this essay is the same as if your child were starting from scratch. We will explore the storyline to make sure it checks all the boxes.
If your child simply wants a review of their essay and a collaborative session to discuss how to make it stronger, we can provide this help.
We are also available to work with students or adults to help write and edit papers, resumes, etc.
SUPPLEMENTAL ESSAYS
In addition to the “main” essay, many selective colleges and universities require additional pieces of writing from applicants to further demonstrate why they are a good fit for its school. Prospective students should make sure they aren't repeating something that's already been covered in their main essay.
